All you need to know about the 407 Training Visa
The purpose of the 407 Training Visa is to promote international goodwill by allowing Australian businesses to sponsor individuals to travel to and stay in Australia for occupational training. The visa is not intended to fill labor shortages, and its primary focus is on providing training opportunities rather than serving as a work visa. The visa allows applicants to work in Australia for a maximum of 2 years, with the possibility of renewing it at the end of the training period.
There are three types of occupational training covered under the Subclass 407 visa:
- Workplace-based training required for registration.
- Structured workplace-based training to enhance skills in an eligible occupation.
- Training that promotes capacity building overseas.
The application process for the 407 Training Visa involves three stages for organizations that are not Commonwealth agencies:
- Sponsorship Application: The sponsoring organization must apply to become a temporary activities sponsor.
- Nomination Application: The sponsoring organization nominates the applicant for the proposed occupation training.
- Visa Application: The applicant submits their visa application.
For Commonwealth agencies, the application process involves only two stages: Sponsorship application and Visa Application. Commonwealth agencies do not need to lodge a nomination.
The Nomination Type 2 is the most common type of nomination. To be considered under this type, the occupational training should be structured for the nominated person based on their training needs. The nominee should have at least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation to which the training relates in the 24 months preceding the nomination.
The training program should be tailored to the nominee’s specific training needs and include an assessment of their current skills, skills assessment, details of supervisors, trainers, and assessors, as well as planned learning outcomes. The program should clearly differentiate between practical work experience and instructional or observation periods and should outline objectives, tasks, timeframes, and the progression of skills.
The visa application has various criteria, including age, English proficiency, an approved nomination, no adverse consequences for Australian residents, adequate health insurance, a genuine intention to stay for the training duration, financial support, passing the character test, and meeting health examination requirements.
If the nomination is approved, the applicant will receive a letter with the nomination identification number and the date the nomination ceases, which is required for the visa application. If the nomination is not approved, the applicant will receive a letter with the reasons for refusal and information about any rights to merit reviews.
There is no limit to how many 407 visas an individual may hold sequentially, provided that the nominator and applicant continue to meet all criteria for approval of the nomination, and there is a genuine continuing need for the occupational training.
